In many rural spots in Arizona, including on the road to Oatman, expect signs cautioning motorists about burros for many years to come.

Three burros were shot to death just north of the Valley, and federal authorities are searching for those responsible.

The killings happened in the Morgan City Wash, just south of Lake Pleasant and not far from State Route 74.

Someone found the decomposing bodies of the three female burros in late May. Since that time, Bureau of Land Management Law Enforcement concluded the animals died from gunshot wounds. One burro had been shot in the stomach, and the other two were shot in the head.

The BLM is now offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Anyone with information can call 800-637-9152. All calls will be confidential.

Wild burros are federally protected by the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
