One of the largest school districts in the Valley passed a final budget, factoring in millions of Proposition 123 and voter-approved budget override money.
In a 3-2 vote, the Deer Valley Unified School District board passed a $200 million budget. An override that narrowly passed in 2015 will raise property taxes by about $108 a year for those in the district, and will go toward giving teachers their first "meaningful raise" in eight years. A meaningful raise is a raise that's more than one percent.
Returning teachers also will get a seniority bonus.
The budget allocates half of the Proposition 123 money for other staff, like administrative and custodians, salary compensation. The other half will go toward purchasing textbooks and buses, which a spokesperson said were desperately needed.
Deer Valley serves around 35,000 students and covers about 360 square miles.
