Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye has signed an emergency declaration days after devastating flooding.

Heavy rainfall last week led to flash flooding that damaged homes, washed out roadways and killed livestock in Shiprock and Chinle.

Tribal officials said the declaration signed Sunday means all Navajo Nation divisions and departments must immediately respond to the impacted communities. Flooding severely damaged a dozen or so homes, officials said, and a number of vehicles got stuck on flooded roads.

In Shiprock, the flooding even forced some residents to evacuate to a tribal government building.

President Begaye said he has toured some of affected areas, and wants to use all the tribe’s resources to help residents.
