Sonoran desert dwellers are closing in on southerners when it comes to loving sweet tea.

If you’ve stayed cool through the Phoenix summer with a glass of sweetened iced-tea, you’re not alone. A new survey shows that almost a third of people living in the Southwest desert drink sweet tea daily.

Online magazine Modern Restaurant Management just released their latest report on the American retail food industry, including trends, consumer habits and changing tastes. Among the results: we are the United States of Sweet Tea.

And while it may come as no surprise that the Southeastern United States is home to the most sweet tea drinkers, at 34 percent, the Southwest almost ties at 33 percent of survey respondents who say they drink sweet tea daily.

The Northeast, Midwest and Western U.S. lag far behind.

Almost half of survey respondents say they’d drive at least three miles out of their way for the perfect glass of tea. And, 69 percent say a perfect glass of sweet tea is better than a good afternoon nap.
