Flagstaff Unified School District Hopes New Trays Will Make Lunch More Environmentally Friendly

The Flagstaff Unified School District is hoping to make lunchtime a little more environmentally friendly this year by using biodegradable trays in their high school cafeterias.

The switch over to a biodegradable tray has been in the works for several years. Officials said it came to a head last year when an environmental science class officially presented the idea to the school board.

The district is testing out the trays in their high schools before expanding them to the elementary schools.

"They’re not as sturdy as the trays we were using before so there is a little bit of concern of particularly elementary students dropping the trays or folding them," explained Karin Eberhard, a FUSD spokesperson.

The new trays will cost the district $5 more pack of 500. The program will be evaluated in November.
