Yelp Tries To Crack Down On Incentives For Positive Reviews

Let’s say you’re looking for a place to go for dinner. Or, maybe a swimming school. Or, a moving company.

You might go to Yelp, and check out what people who’ve used those services have to say about them, right?

Yelp certainly hopes so. The company, however, has had to deal with some reviews that weren’t written just for informational purposes.

Yelp this year announced some companies, including a few in Arizona, have been offering incentives to reviewers —that’s a no-no, and Yelp is trying to get the word out about this.

"If people can't trust that those reviews are accurate then that whole component of the site becomes valueless," said Ruth Carter. She’s an attorney, focused on business intellectual property and social media law.
