Republicans Outnumber Democrats, Independents In Latest Voter Counts

New voter registration numbers are out for Arizona and they show tens of thousands of new voters signed up for this month’s primary election.

The Secretary of State’s office reports 47,000 more registered voters in Arizona since the last statewide election in May.

Secretary of State Michele Reagan believes the numbers indicate voters are “re-engaging” with political parties.

According to Reagan, many independents who wanted to vote in the Presidential Preference Election, apparently decided to stay affiliated, with registered Republicans now outnumbering independents in the state by more than 20,000. It’s the first time that’s happened since January of 2014.

Of the just over 3.4 million voters in the state about 35 percent are registered Republicans,  30 percent are Democrats and 34 percent are unaffiliated. Libertarians and Green Party members make up less than 1 percent.

The bulk of the new signups come from the state’s largest county, Maricopa, where 30,000 additional voters have signed up since the spring.
