The Arizona Lottery just opened a store inside Sky Harbor International Airport. The 500 square-foot space in Terminal 4 near baggage claim features two counters where people can buy and redeem tickets along with a vending machine and lounge area.
Lottery Executive Director Gregg Edgar says store hours will vary depending on the day.
“We worked with the airport to kind of zero-in those time frames when flights are usually coming through,” he said. “We’re going to be open when we have the opportunity to reach the most players and the most folks that would be looking to play the games.”
He expects the store to generate between $2.8 and $3.4 million in annual sales. The Lottery will spend about $160,000 to lease the airport space for three years.
“Looking at how lottery has done in airports across the country, it is a successful venture between lottery and the municipalities that they’re in,” Edgar said. “It’s generally a well-received commodity that people want to be able to interact with.”
The Georgia Lottery reports its store at Atlanta-Hartsfield Airport sells more than $7-million in tickets every year.
On Thursday, August 25, the Arizona Lottery will host a public grand opening celebration at the airport from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
