An overflow homeless shelter in Phoenix just got a $95,000 cash infusion. The funding will help the facility stay open through February.
The overflow shelter at the Human Services Department in downtown Phoenix was set to run out of funding and shut down in October. The additional money was approved by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors earlier this month.
Bruce Liggett, the director of the county’s Human Services Department, said while the funding will extend the life of the shelter, their capacity will be limited to just 250 clients a night.
"There is a need for shelter but the real solution is housing for homeless," he said. "Permanent housing with support services. That’s the real solution. So shelters should be temporary situations."
In addition to the county money, the facility will also receive $180,000 from the Valley of the Sun United Way and the Arizona Department of Housing and Economic Security.
