Water meters in Tempe will soon get a high tech upgrade to monitor water use in real time.
Right now, water meters are read manually, about once a month requiring city employees to drive out to each individual meter.
The transition to the automated meters will take place over the next few years. Tempe Mayor Mark Mitchell says the move is a step toward sustainability as the new system will allow officials to identify leaks and conserve water.
The meters can be read remotely from a central location to save time and money. Eventually residents will also be able to monitor their individual use through the system.
No service interruptions are expected.
