Incumbents Victorious In Arizona Corporation Commission GOP Primary

Corporation Commissioner Bob Burns.

The GOP primary for the Arizona Corporation Commission appears to be a victory for the incumbents. Bob Burns took 23.7 percent of the vote. The other commissioner Andy Tobin had 23 percent. Boyd Dunn took third, with nearly 19 percent— enough to advance to the general election.

Burns and Tobin have clashed on the commission, but that didn’t matter when it came to the primary.

Tobin, a former speaker of the Arizona House, was appointed this year by Governor Doug Ducey and is now running for a full term. He has disagreed with Burns over whether to force Arizona Public Service to disclose if it was behind dark money spending on commission races in the last election.

Burns has made that issue central to his campaign. There are three seats on the five person commission up for grabs this year. The three Republican candidates will now advance to the general election where they will face Democrats Tom Chabin and Bill Mundell.
