Unofficial results in Glendale’s mayoral race show the candidates separated by less than 1 percent with all precincts reporting.
The Maricopa County Recorder updated preliminary results Wednesday afternoon, and challenger Mark Burdick still trails incumbent Mayor Jerry Weiers by less than 200 votes.
Burdick retired as Glendale’s fire chief in 2015, and shortly after announced plans to run for mayor.
Weiers is a former state lawmaker who took office in 2013 as Glendale faced potential bankruptcy.
Weiers said Wednesday morning via telephone that he felt good about preliminary results posted Tuesday night, but wasn’t ready to declare victory.
Burdick responded to a Wednesday morning text that he was “holding firm,” and “optimistic" he could still unseat the elected official he once served under.
Barring a tie, the winner will take office in January, according to Glendale officials.
