Copper mining giant Freeport McMoRan has already passed the environmental standards needed to move forward with repairs and updates at its Bagdad location. The only thing left until work can begin is a 30-day window to allow comments from the public, that began Tuesday.
Freeport McMoran passed its environmental assessment, the report required to move forward with proposed repairs on its Bagdad mine in Kingman. Bagdad is looking for permission for two things: one request is to get permission to extend a waste rock stockpile at the south of the open pit. The other is to modify access roads and do repairs to power lines.
The Bureau of Land Management said all work is considered standard maintenance operations and has already approved environmental inspections.
The open period for public comment is 30 days, ending Oct. 6, when work can begin. Electronic copies of the environmental assessment and project scope can be viewed at the company website.
