A Maricopa County Superior Court judge says Attorney General Mark Brnovich can intervene in lawsuits brought by the group Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities (AID). The group has filed hundreds of lawsuits against local businesses for violating the Americans With Disabilities Act.
In court documents the state argued AID’s lawsuits were circumventing the proper channels for dealing with ADA enforcement. Brnovich wants the cases dismissed.
AID’s attorney contends private litigation is necessary because the state hasn’t been effectively enforcing ADA regulations.
Officials with AID didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about Friday’s ruling but had previously told KJZZ that the AG’s involvement was despicable and he’s siding with “the law breaking defendants.”
On Twitter, Brnovich said Friday’s decision was the first step in protecting Arizona’s small businesses.
