Officials in Phoenix are tightening security at the City Hall building downtown. Residents will soon have to go through a metal detector and bag screener before being allowed inside.

The new security plan has been in the works since late last year and officials hope to have it fully functional by the end of the month.

Lisa Jones, the Phoenix emergency management director, said the move is not the result of a specific security threat.

"The fact that we are the sixth largest populous community, we just have to look at how do we be proactive to be sure that we’re doing all that we can do both for our employees as well as those that are visiting our facilities downtown," Jones said.

Jones said the new security measures should not slow visitors down by more than a few minutes.

The project will cost the city about $400,000.
