Almost a month after Maricopa County announced it may sell Chase Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks say the team has yet to meet with the prospective buyers.
But this isn’t the first time the county flirted with selling the stadium.
Recently released documents show Maricopa County explored selling Chase Field to the Diamondbacks in 2010.
Unlike the current proposal, a sale to the team would not have included the land underneath the stadium.
The D-backs wanted to lower rent, said Fields Moseley, communications director for Maricopa County. After initial talks, county officials requested an appraisal to gauge the stadium’s market value.
The appraisers produced a draft that estimated Chase Field was worth between $40 million and $50 million.
When the Board of Supervisors reviewed the draft, they decided a deal wasn’t viable, Moseley said. They voted not to have the appraisal finalized, and kept in place the original agreement between the club and the county.
