The Bullhead City Regatta is sunk. The Bullhead City Council voted to end the 10-year event on Tuesday after pleas from the Fort Mohave Indian Tribe and other members of the public.
Tribal authorities asked the council to end the regatta, citing bodily waste that ends up in the river's water after drunken revelers attend the event.
Standing before the council, Timothy Williams represented the Fort Mohave Tribal Council at the meeting.
“People are coming into our river that do not respect our river, they destroy it. They don’t respect it because they don’t have that same responsibility that we do. They don’t have the same duties as we do,” Williams said.
Mayor Tom Brady said of the more than 30,000 participants last year, fewer than 350 were from Bullhead City.
Brady also acknowledged the economic benefits to the event. He eventually voted to end the event citing issues including excessive trash and over worked police and fire officials.
