A group of protesters shut down the Mill Avenue bridge this morning. The "Moral Monday" march was organized as a statement against police brutality in Tempe.
This is the latest of several protests led by the Rev. Jarrett Maupin. Previous marches were directed at downtown Phoenix and have been held at night. But Maupin said after continued action, police are still not listening to the voices of African-Americans.
“That’s why we’re out here on a Monday morning. To shut down a street, to close down traffic and disrupt regular city business because of the way racism and police brutality is disrupting the lives of black people," Maupin said.
Maupin and at least two other protesters were arrested during Monday's march.
Protestors called for the firing of the Tempe police Officer Lt. Ed Ouimette, who shot and killed Dalvin Hollins after Hollins reportedly robbed a Tempe Walgreens. No gun was found on Hollins and Ouimette did not have his body camera on.
Hollins’s mother, Sarah Coleman, was one of close to 50 protesters that shut down Mill Avenue. She said she hopes the protest can bring healing and awareness to the community.
