In recent years, attention has been focused on unaccompanied, undocumented minors from Central America.
They arrived in the U.S. and were placed in shelters.
But there’s another kind of situation facing mothers and kids who travel to the U.S. under similar circumstances. They’re being placed in family detention centers and some are being kept there for extended months rather than just days.
Phoenix attorney Sambo Dul has volunteered with the CARA Family Detention Pro Bono Project to offer assistance and provide legal guidance to families detained in Dilley, Texas.
She spoke to KJZZ's The Show about the family detention centers and her own experience coming to Phoenix as a child from Cambodia.
"What was most kind of hard for me in Dilley was seeing my own mom and my own daughter in the women and the children that were there and imagining how I would feel if that were them in these women's shoes" Dul said.
