Heavy Storms Shut Down Schools In Safford

A weekend storm heavily damaged local schools in Eastern Arizona.

Flooding and hail  shut down multiple locations in the city of Safford. Safford Unified School District closed all six of its schools after a severe rain and hailstorm hit Gila Valley this weekend.

The National Weather service said more than 2 inches of rain fell in the area on Saturday.

A portion of a main thoroughfare in Safford collapsed due to the high volume of rushing water and many schools suffered flood damage.

The closure affects more than 3,200 students in the district. Superintendent Ken VanWinkle said the schools need serious repairs. He does not yet have an estimated cost. The schools are expected to re-open October 24.
