The city of Chandler joined several other Arizona cities in limiting the use of electronic cigarettes by banning their use in city buildings.
The City Council approved the ordinance at meeting Monday night and it will take effect in November. The ban applies to all Chandler-owned and occupied buildings and the city hall grounds.
Jeff Kurtz, the planning administrator for Chandler, said private businesses will still be able to regulate electronic cigarette use on their property.
"It was purely a focus on city owned buildings," Kurtz said. "It’d be your classic ones you’d think about like city hall and fire stations and libraries and those type of things.“
Kurtz said the law extends the Chandler’s existing ban on smoking tobacco or other plants on city property.
“It wasn’t always clear that the same regulations that everyone enjoys regarding smoking actually extended to the use of electronic cigarettes,” Kurtz said.
Tempe and Gilbert also limit the use of electronic cigarettes.
