ADOT was awarded a $1 million federal grant to update the lighting system.

The US 60 tunnel east of Queen Creek will be closed every night this week, as the Arizona Department of Transportation finishes installing LED lights.

The highway will close in both directions between Superior and Oak Flat. The closure will run from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Road closures will last until Friday morning.

Tom Herrmann, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Transportation, said the tunnel is the first in the state to have LED lights installed.

“This is going to give us a chance to provide better lighting inside the tunnel because it will adjust to the light conditions and the weather conditions outside the tunnel, instead of simply turning on the lights,” said Herrmann.

Travelers can take State Route 77 and State Route 177. Alternate routes are also available to the White Mountains region by using State Route 87 and State Route 260 through Payson.
