Some Goodyear residents have worried there aren’t enough fire stations to serve the growing population and a 13-week study on where to build more stations is underway.
Officials said they hoped the study would be done in October or November. Now they say it should be ready around Thanksgiving. The city council won’t review it until December.
Goodyear is one of the fastest growing cities in the country, and it hasn’t opened a new fire station since the Great Recession.
The city is not dragging its feet on public safety, said Amy Bolton, Goodyear public information officer.
“I think that the amount of time that it takes to get it right — and to get the information and collect it and make sure that we’re involving the appropriate stakeholders along the way of the study — I think that that’s worth it,” Bolton said.
The contract to do the study is about $53,000, roughly 10 percent less than officials had estimated.
A new fire station costs millions, and could take years to design, build and staff.
