A Navajo group requested a court order to require San Juan County, Utah, to open additional polling places. But a federal judge struck down the request Oct. 14.
The Navajo Human Rights Commission asked a court for more polling places and Navajo translators, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.
Just over the border north of Lake Powell, San Juan County currently has four polling places and Navajo translators available on and before Election Day. U.S. District Judge Jill Parrish denied the Navajo Human Rights Commission’s motion. Parish said the group didn’t sufficiently show Navajo voters at a disadvantage.
The judge says the county opened three polling sites on the reservation for the primary in June. County officials say the sites are closer to Navajos than they are to most white voters.
