Burton Barr Library in Phoenix.

The word Phoenix seems to have natural poetic roots. How could a city named for a mythological bird that rises from its own ashes not contain that?

Up until now, Phoenix hasn’t had its own poet laureate, though Tucson and the state of Arizona have.

We spoke with Gail Browne, executive director of Phoenix’s Office of Arts and Culture, about why the city is looking for a poet laureate.

The city will be accepting applications to be the first Poet Laureate until Nov. 4, 2016. Leaders of the search are hoping to have someone in place in January for a two-year term.
