Arizona Diamondbacks play at Chase Field in 2017.

The Diamondbacks are taking the first steps toward rebuilding after a disappointing 2016 season.

Arizona’s major league baseball franchise is trying to pick up the pieces after missing the playoffs for a fifth straight year and finishing 24 games under 500.

Today they named Mike Hazen as executive vice president and general manager.  He replaces Dave Stewart, who was fired Oct. 3 after the regular season ended.

The 40-year-old Hazen comes from Boston where he served as VP and GM of the Boston Red Sox. He will now be in charge of all baseball operations for the DBacks.

“I want to help in any way possible in my role and the role of baseball operations to make this a great franchise. It is a great franchise, but I want to continue to take it to the next level," Hazen said.

Hazen’s first order of business with the Diamondbacks will be to hire a new field manager to replace Chip Hale, who was also fired earlier this month.
