Police: Jury Duty Phone Scams Target Peoria Residents

The Peoria Police Department is warning residents about a jury duty phone scam that has reached residents in the area.

The suspect is a male caller who identifies himself as Sgt. Jon Meck from the Peoria Police Department.

Residents are told by the caller that there will be a warrant for their arrest issued if they don’t pay a fine for failure to appear for jury duty or a summons. The caller has been asking residents to provide financial information either online or electronically to pay the fine.

Police spokesman Brandon Sheffert said most government agencies don’t take payments over the phone.

“The Peoria Police Department, nor any police department, is ever going to ask for financial information or ask for payment over the phone for any types of fines. Plus we don’t get involved when it comes to missing jury duty or summons as well,” said Sheffert.

Surprise has also reported these scams in their area. Victims can call Peoria Police Department at 623-773-8311.
