Arizona is considered a political swing state this year, and the economic picture in swing states is different, especially when it comes to home ownership.
Arizona, and other swing states like Nevada and Florida, saw the highest spikes in home prices in the last five years, according to home value website Trulia. These are also states with high Latino populations, and last year was the largest increase in Latino home ownership in more than a decade.
Edward Rydlund is a housing counselor at Chicanos Por La Causa and sees about ten new applications a week from first-time home buyers looking for down-payment assistance.
“She was renting a house before and she was throwing her money away," Rydlund said translating for client Dulce Gonzalez. "Her main concern was a good investment for her and her kids, given stability and something she could have a nice investment in the future for herself.”
Last year was the largest increase in Latino home ownership in more than a decade, according to the 2015 State of Hispanic Homeownership Report.
The report also says Hispanics accounted for nearly 70 percent of all net growth in U.S. home ownership.
