Some students are finally returning to their old classrooms after severe storm damage closed down their schools almost three weeks ago.
The closure affected more than 3,200 students in the Safford Unified School District. All six of the district’s schools shut down after a severe rain and hailstorm caused flooding and other structural damages.
Five of those schools were reopened on Monday.
School Superintendent Ken VanWinkle said it’s nice that things are returning to normal.
“We’re in schools. I think for the parents are happy, for the most part kids are happy. Although I think they liked their little break,” he said with a laugh. “We are happy to have them back.”
One of the elementary schools has not reopened. But, VanWinkle said those students will be attending classes at other schools for at least three more weeks.
