The former governor of Arizona’s neighboring Mexican state of Sonora turned himself in to authorities Thursday. He faces money laundering and tax-evasion accusations by the federal government.
Sonora’s Guillermo Padrés served during former Gov. Jan Brewer’s tenure in Arizona. He was replaced last year, and since then he and his administration have been plagued with charges and accusations. Padrés turned himself over to law enforcement after first appearing on a local radio show in Mexico to proclaim his innocence.
Last year, his former spokesman was arrested on blackmail charges, and various members of his administration were pursued under the state’s corruption laws. Last month, Mexico said it had alerted Interpol to help hunt him down. Padres said he’s been in Mexico all along.
