Several national and local races in Maricopa County are still too close to call. Much of the uncertainty stems from the fact that officials still have more than 400,000 mail in ballots to count.
The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office received a record 1 million mail in ballots before election day this year. County tallying machines had the capacity to process about 831,000 of them once the recorder’s office got approval to start counting from the Arizona Secretary of State’s office.
Voters also had the option to drop their mail in ballots off on election day. The recorder’s office received nearly 250,000 by the end of the night. Recorder’s spokesperson Elizabeth Bartholomew said they will take several days to count.
"We’re looking at hopefully middle of next week for all of the early ballots, for all of the provisionals but it could be sometime middle or end of next week," she explained.
In 2012 Maricopa County had nearly 300,000 ballots that were left uncounted on election day.
