Thousands of Arizona workers will soon see bigger paychecks. Since voters approved raising the state’s minimum wage, many employers now need to boost their payrolls.
Starting January 1, 2017 Arizona’s minimum wage will jump nearly $2 an hour, to $10. It will then increase 50 cents per year until it hits $12.
Employees who earn tips can be paid less in certain cases.
Numerous business groups opposed the hike saying it would force some employers to cut staff or raise prices.
Union groups say a higher wage will help workers cover basic needs and increase employee retention.
Proposition 206 also requires employers to provide earned sick days.
A study by the non-partisan Grand Canyon Institute finds about 800,000 Arizonans will get raises, while about 13,000 jobs could be lost.
