Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was, for many years, one of the most popular and difficult to defeat elected officials in Arizona.
The tide seemed to shift significantly in the lead up to his 2012 reelection bid — but Arpaio narrowly defeated Democratic challenger Paul Penzone.
Last Tuesday, Penzone got over the hump and beat Arpaio, knocking America’s so-called "toughest sheriff" out of a position he’s held for 24 years.
