A group of Buckeye residents have filed paperwork to recall the mayor, city officials confirmed.
Spiking water bills led Buckeye residents to demand answers from city officials, and those spearheading efforts to unseat Mayor Jackie Meck are not satisfied with the response.
The initial process will take about six months, and August is the earliest a special election could occur.
First, the group seeking to oust Meck gets 120 days to gather signatures. Then, the Maricopa County recorder has 60 days to verify them. If the recorder certifies a minimum of 1,718 signatures, then a recall will go on the ballot.
Buckeye resident Chad Taylor has said he will challenge Meck, who won re-election this year.
