More than six million people have visited Grand Canyon National Park so far this year – a record for the park.
The Grand Canyon has seen a steady increase in visitation in recent years. In this year alone the park has seen an uptick of more than 7 percent.
Park officials believe the increase is due in part to social media, which was used to raise awareness about the National Park Service’s centennial.
The honor of being the six millionth visitor went to a family from Las Vegas – all at the park for the first time.
Since the Grand Canyon opened in 1919, more than 200 million people have visited.
