In Northern Arizona, search crews rescued a Pennsylvania family that had gotten lost in heavy snow while trying to reach the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
The remote North Rim closed two months ago for the winter.
The highway that leads to the North Rim closes every October, but the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said the family followed their GPS onto a separate Forest Service road, then got stuck in the snow Thursday.
The father and the couple’s 10-year-old son were rescued Friday, after they were able to hike to a spot that had cellphone service and call for help.
The mother was rescued Saturday morning after multiple agencies in the region launched an air and ground search for her.
The Sheriff’s Office said she had walked approximately 26 miles in search of help before taking refuge in a seasonally closed park guard shack.
She’s being treated for cold exposure, while her husband and son are being treated for cold exposure and frostbite.
