After a 24-year run as sheriff, Joe Arpaio’s name can still be seen all over Maricopa County. But new sheriff Paul Penzone is changing that.
A Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office press release said Penzone’s name is replacing Arpaio’s on many — but not all — buildings, vehicles, street signs and computerized forms.
On vehicles and buildings, that means removing Arpaio’s name or covering it with reflective tape. In the case of forms, many will simply have the MSCO logo, without the name of the new sheriff. A plan of action is still being formulated for street signs.
The changeover is complete at MCSO headquarters on Jackson Street, but the release gives no definite timeline for the entire changeover. The release said Penzone’s “top priority” is delivering quality, cost-effective law enforcement — and not the name changes.
