A push by a Flagstaff lawmaker to financially punish colleges and universities that teach “ethnic studies” classes may be going nowhere.
Republican Paul Boyer chairs the House Education Committee. He confirmed Tuesday that his committee will not hear a bill put forth by fellow Republican Bob Thorpe.
Boyer didn’t say why the bill would not advance. But Boyer’s action isn’t necessarily the last word.
Thorpe could attach his measure to a bill that has already been approved by the Senate, bypassing the committee.
The bill proposes a ban on classes that promote division or resentment toward another race, gender, political affiliation or social class. Violators would lose 10 percent of their state funding.
