Fontes Aims To Redraw Voting-Precinct Boundaries, Boost Poll-Worker Pay

Adrian Fontes says he hopes to redraw voting-precinct boundary lines during his tenure at the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office. He was one of several newly elected county officials to present and defend their budget requests to the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday.

Fontes says he hopes redrawing precincts will help to even out the number of registered voters assigned to each polling place, and, in turn, reduce wait times on Election Day.

He also wants to significantly increase poll-worker pay and restructure the agency’s communication’s department to prevent things like ineligible voters clogging polls during primary elections like we saw last spring.

"We’re aware of the techniques that have been used in the past. But with all due respect I think the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. This is a different thing. And we’re trying something that has not been tried," Fontes said.

Fontes also proposed allotting more space in the elections office for early-ballot preparation. He argues that’s the bottleneck slowing down the ballot-counting process.
