Campaign finance numbers from the Maricopa County Sheriff race show Republican Joe Arpaio spent $12.6 million in his unsuccessful bid for a seventh term.
That’s 12 times the amount Democrat and nearest opponent Paul Penzone spent to upend Arpaio’s bid.
Spending a reported $1 million, Penzone managed to pull ahead of the longtime Sheriff by nearly 13 percentage points in the November general election.
Penzone had a little help, with an additional $3.2 million in contributions from business tycoon George Soros.
