State lawmakers want to force Arizona drivers to buy more insurance. A new bill would boost the personal injury liability minimum to pay for deaths or injuries caused by an auto accident.
Representative Kate Brophy McGee wants to increase the minimum coverage from $15,000 per person to $25,000. She also wants to increase the amount of coverage a person has per incident from $30,000 to $50,000.
“People think that because that's the limit that's set in statute, that is what's going to protect me," Brophy McGee said. "So they don't feel the obligation or the understanding or the necessity of buying more.”
Brophy McGee said the existing minimums haven’t been adjusted since 1972.
Opponents of the bill said the additional costs could cause more Arizonans to forgo insurance altogether because they can’t afford it.
