Mexico Selects New Ambassador To US

President-elect Donald Trump did something uncommon, though not unprecedented, when he asked all of President Obama’s appointed ambassadors to resign.

That will leave him with 188 foreign service posts to fill. Most will go to supporters and donors.

To get a broader perspective on the role of ambassador, we spoke to Sue McCourt Cobb. She was U.S. ambassador to Jamaica from 2001-05.

Just as the Trump administration will be getting its bearings and preparing to name a long list of ambassadors, one of the nation’s most important trading partners, Mexico, has selected a new ambassador to the U.S. His name is Geronimo Gutierrez, managing director of the North American Development Bank.

Erik Lee, executive director of the North American Research Partnership, follows U.S.-Mexico relations very closely and joined us to talk about the new ambassador.
