It’s called “The People’s Open” for a reason.
It seems like every year the Waste Management Phoenix Open breaks its previous attendance record. And organizers say the tournament is poised to do it again this year.
On the first day of the tournament, Thursday, 103,420 spectators attended. But, that’s still about 15,000 fewer people than its record-setting 2015 opening-day total.
But tournament organizers are still optimistic. They say with the nice weather in the forecast, they’re expecting even larger crowds throughout the weekend.
Last year’s Phoenix Open recording-breaking attendance was more than 618,000 fans.
And as part of the PGA’s FedEx Cup, big names including Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson also helping draw in more spectators.
The tournament ends Sunday.
