Nuclear Regulatory Commission Conducts Special Inspection At Palo Verde Station

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission began a special inspection at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station near Buckeye on Monday. They’re looking for the reason an emergency diesel generator failed during a recent monthly inspection.

The diesel generator in question is a backup power supply that’s only used if the nuclear generating station loses off-site power during an emergency.

Officials with the NRC will be at Palo Verde this week to take a closer look at the situation.

"We want to look at what the root cause of the failure was," said Victor Dricks, an agency spokesman. "And we’re going to be looking at the licensee’s repair of the diesel to ensure they’ve gotten to the true root cause."

The results of the inspection should be made public 45 days after its completed.
