A bill that would allow illuminated billboards in northwest Arizona took another step forward Monday.
Senate Bill 1114 would permit dozens of such signs in Mohave County.
Opponents worry light pollution could damage the state’s astronomy industry.
Astronomer Elizabeth Alvarez said there needs to be limitations.
"We're not against light," Alvarez said. "But don't waste it -- or cause harm by how you use it. If the goal of outdoor advertising is to direct the message to the audience, then both an excess of light and misdirection are damaging. “
A similar bill that would have allowed unlimited billboards in Mohave County proposed last year failed.
