Some Arizona lawmakers took the first steps to place a 10 cent gas tax on the 2018 ballot. If approved, it would be the first hike since 1991.
Proponents of the measure say it’s needed because of decaying road conditions.
"We lose as an industry over $500 million a year in congestion costs just in the state of Arizona," said Tony Bradley, president of the Arizona Trucking Association. "The maintenance costs are almost unquantifiable."
One lawmaker who voted against the measure, argued a more permanent solution is needed. He also said any solution also needs to address people with electric vehicles, who use the roads, but don’t pay their fair share.
