Justice of the Peace C. Steven McMurry prepares to cut the ribbon to the Southwest Regional Court Center in Avondale. McMurry is surrounded by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, County Manager Joy Rich (right) and Superior Court Judge Janet Barton.

Maricopa County hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for its brand new Southwest Regional Court Center in Avondale, which officially opens Feb. 21.

The roughly 76,000-square-foot building will house four justice courts, and has room to expand.

“This is a facility that has been designed and built for the ages,” said Denny Barney, chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Justice Courts deal with civil and criminal traffic cases. They also handle protective orders and small claims of up to $3,500.

The $22.3 million Southwest Regional Court Center will serve portions of six West Valley cities and part of Phoenix. It’s different from other government buildings, Supervisor Steve Gallardo said.

“Because this is a place in which someone that can’t afford an attorney, someone with very little money, is able to walk through (those) doors and seek justice,” Gallardo said.
