As part of a crack-down by the Arizona Department of Public Safety and Phoenix police, 23 people were arrested and more than 100 people received citations for performing the reckless stunt on Phoenix-area roadways over the weekend.
Quinton Mehr, DPS spokesman, said street racers have been making the large circles on side streets over the past month but have recently started to cause bigger problems on the freeways.
“When actions like these are being taken on city streets, or on the interstate, the potential is there for some pretty catastrophic results,” he said.
These stunts have predominantly been performed on city streets but have also been seen backing up traffic on Interstate 10 and the Loop 101 in the West Valley.
Those arrested are facing charges including racing, criminal damage and reckless speed.
