Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas said her office will not be weighing in on the question of which bathroom a transgender student in Arizona should use.
Her spokesman, Stefan Swiat, said Douglas believes the decision should be made on the local level.
"The Superintendent is a big proponent of local control and she believes that matters such as these should be left to school boards to handle because they know their individual communities better than anyone," he said.
Douglas’s stance was released after President Donald Trump rescinded an Obama administration executive order last week that mandated schools receiving federal money to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity.
