Proposed Bill Would Allow Arizonans To Fight Unexpected Medical Bills

Lawmakers are considering a bill that would give Arizonans a chance to fight unexpected medical bills.

Senator Debbie Lesko said SB 1441 will help in cases where a patient goes in for a procedure thinking they are covered by insurance, only to receive a bill from a provider the hospital had not contracted with.

"I'm doing this for patients. I'm not doing this for the insurance companies," Lesko said. "I'm not doing it for doctors. I'm not doing it for hospitals. I'm doing it for the patients."

Other Republicans expressed concerns over the measure.

Senator Kate Brophy McGee said she fears that at some point doctors could decide they don't want to work at hospitals because they may not get their bills paid in full.
